Sun and Joshua presented their research in the 2021 Digital Forestry Retreat today. Sun’s presentation title was “Indiana Statewide LiDAR data product development and validation”, and Joshua’s presentation title was “Individual Tree Segmentation”. Both presentations were very well received by the audience.
How to add Indiana LiDAR data product layers in GIS software
We are hosting below LiDAR data product tile maps derived from the Indiana 3D Elevation Program LiDAR data.
- Normalized Digital Height Model(NDHM): Height measured from the ground surface to the top of the objects. The spatial resolution of the NDHM layers are 100ft GSD* for statewide, 5ft GSD for countywide tile maps.
- Digital Terrain Model(DTM): Elevation of ground surface. Only countywide layers are provided with 5ft GSD.
*GSD: ground sampling distance (pixel size on the ground)
You can easily add these maps as background in QGIS following the instruction below. Please refer to this link to add XYZ tiles in ArcGIS. Original LiDAR data and raster files can be also downloaded from the Indiana LiDAR data portal also maintained by our team.

Logansport Low Head Dam UAS Data Collection
We (Sun, Joshua, and Nikhil) went to Logansport, IN on July 15, 2021, to collect UAS data over low head dams that will be demolished later in 2021. Dr. Sweeten’s group showed us the low head dams and also helped us locate take-off and landing locations for the UAS data collection. We also had a great discussion on potential collaboration in the near future.
UAS demonstration in the Hoosier National Forest Research Field Meeting
Our research group gave a live demonstration of UAS LiDAR and multispectral data collection and processing in the Hoosier National Forest Research Field meeting held in Tell City, IN on June 17, 2021.
